Varanasi / Kathmandu
Nepal first opened to tourism in the 1950’s, and has therefore
retained an unspoiled, medieval charm. Nestled in an enchanting Himalayan
valley, Kathmandu is a must-see addition to any tour of India. It would
be a shame to be so close and miss out on this unique opportunity.
This afternoon we take a direct flight
from Varanasi to Kathmandu. We are greeted upon arrival, and provided
assistance with transfer to our hotel. The evening is free. (Breakfast)

Touring Kathmandu
Weather permitting, we recommend taking an optional scenic flight over
the Himalays, including a view of Mt. Everest, early this morning. Information
will be available upon arrival, and those taking the flight will pay
directly. This cost is about $150. If it is not possible to do the flight
today, it can be scheduled tomorrow morning instead.
This morning we tour Kathmandu City, including
a stop at Durbar Square, the center of the original town containing
more than fifty intricately carved temples, palaces and monuments. In
the Square is the Kumari Devi, or home of the Living Goddess, who is
chosen through an elaborate process when the girl is approximately three
years of age. She reigns as the Goddess, worshipped by Hindus, Buddhists
and the King himself until she reaches puberty and another Kumari is
chosen. We also visit the Swayambhunath
Stupa, one of the most ancient and enigmatic of all the holy
shrines in Kathmandu valley.
There are actually three Durbar Squares
in the Kathmandu Valley, and we are going to see another one this afternoon
as we visit Patan, the city of metalwork pottery. It is a part of old
Kathmandu, and has some of the most facinating wooden temples. We see
street after street of blacksmiths tinkering over their tools, making
pots and statues. Returning to the hotel, the evening is free. (Breakfast)

Pashupatinath / Boudhanath / Bhaktapur
This morning visit the town of Pashupatinath,
located on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River, to observe funeral
and worship rituals and see the exterior of the Temple (foreigners are
not allowed inside). Next visit Boudhanath,
one of the world’s largest temples, built by Tibetan refugees
from the Communist invasion. Finally, enjoy a walking tour if the 9th
century fortified town of Bhaktapur.
See examples of the architectural splendor of the past and watch today’s
bustling activity in the town square (another Durbar Square). Returning
to the hotel, the evening is free. (Breakfast)

Return to Delhi / Departure
Transfer to the airport this morning for our return flight to Delhi.
Upon arrival in Delhi we are met and transfered to our hotel, where
we enjoy free time before returning to the airport for your international
flight. Most U.S.-bound flights typically depart in the early hours,
just after midnight. Be careful when booking your return flight to ensure
that it departs either very late at night on December 4, or very early
in the morning on December 5.
