Castles in the Sky
Trekking in Nepal

Photo Gallery

  Staff musicians
at our Kathmandu
hotel welcome us
to Nepal

  One of our
first activities
will be flightseeing

  Skirting the line
of the High Himalayas,
we see Mt. Everest
in the distance

  Enjoy a walking
tour of Bhaktapur

  Here we get our
first exposure to
Nepali art and
traditions

  We also have
the opportunity
to observe local
life and customs

  Have a
chat with local
children

  Notice the eyeliner
at a very early age

It is typical to see
young men holding hands
or with arms draped
around each other
as they walk

  A woman works
with grain in the street

A Toto Tourist
lends a hand

Hope the boy without
his pants isn't getting
any funny ideas

  Bhaktapur is known
for its intricate carvings
in wood

  The wood is so
hard it has
weathered the
centuries

  Detail of the fine
wood carving

  One of the most famous
carvings in Bhaktapur

  Next visit the
holy city of
Pashupatinath

Situated on the
Bagmati River,
many Hindus come
here to die

  Their bodies are burned
and the ashes consigned
to the river

  We fly to
Pokhara and
make our way
to our trailhead

  We commence
one of the most
beautiful hikes
in the world

  Ascending gradually
at first, and then more
steeply, we begin our
trek in the Annapurna
Range of the Himalayas

  Go at your own
pace, and enjoy
the stunning views
that change around
every twist and turn
of the trail

At times it feels
like you are climbing
a stairway to heaven

Exercise on a
stairmaster is
highly recommended
as a means of
conditioning
for this tour

  You can feel your
buns lifting and firming
with each passing step

  A welcome rest break
to enjoy lunch surrounded
by a breathtaking view

  We have a veritable
army of men to serve us

  Our lead guide
is in charge

  He is assisted by several
English-speaking Sherpas,
who are interspersed through
our group to offer assistance
and answer any questions

  Other young men have the
unenviable task of portering
our luggage from one camp
to the next

  Most of the porters
put the luggage in a
basket like the one being
carried by this woman,
supported by a strap
around the forehead

  They scoot up the trail
ahead of us and have
our tented camp
all set up by the
time we arrive

  If we happen to be
camping beside a river,
an invigorating plunge
feels great after a
full day on the trail

  Having carried
our baggage, the
porters now relax
and play cards

  We often camp near
a lodge, and you have
the option of sleeping
indoors if a room
is available

  Whether camping or
sleeping in a lodge,
meals are served
outdoors in the most
glorious settings

  You won't believe
your eyes, as we
progress higher and
higher in the mountains

  From time to time we
pass a restaurant
with a gorgeous view

We sit for a while to rest,
enjoy some tea, some
snacks, and the ever-
astounding scenery

  Gradually the
trail becomes
more and more
forested

  Along the trail
you might pass
a herd of goats, . . .

  . . . a colorful
shrine, . . .

  . . . some of our
porters taking
a break in the
shade, . . .

  . . . or come upon
a group of Toto
Tourists enjoying
a particularly
photogenic spot

  You will never forget
the moment when you
first see the High
Himalayas, peeping
through the trees

  All cameras come out
at the first clearing, for
shots worthy of your next
Holiday Greeting Card

  The camaraderie at
moments like this is
absolutely unforgettable

On our fifth day of trekking
we make the push to the
top of Poon Hill before sunrise,
there to raise the gay flag, . . .

  . . . and pose for the
most amazing photos, . . .

  . . . with the High
Himalayas in the
background

Returning to a different
trailhead, we board
a bus for the short
drive to Pokhara

Some choose to ride
on top of the bus

  Our hotel in Pokhara is
aptly named Shangri La,
as the hot showers and
pool are a true paradise

  Enjoy a free day in
Pokhara to rest and
enjoy the tranquil beauty
of the lake

  The next portion of
this amazing adventure
is set in the fertile
lands of Chitwan
National Park

  Driving to the Park
we see many people
working in the fields

  One of our means
of transportation
in the National Park

  At our lodge you will
have the opportunity to
get familiar with
elephants

  Take safari rides
through the tall
grasses in search
of Bengal Tigers

The view from the
back of an elephant

You can see how easy
it is for tigers to hide
in this tall grass

  If we are lucky,
we will encounter
a rhino

  One of the highlights
is bathing with the
elephants in the river
